Buoyant City: Historic District Resiliency & Adaptation Guidelines
(work completed at DLAND/Sasaki)

These resiliency and adaptation guidelines for Miami Beach’s historic districts account for the city’s cultural heritage, economic development, and the larger environment in order to address the anticipated result of climate change. These guidelines were commissioned by the City of Miami Beach and unanimously adopted by the Preservation Board in 2020.

A primary goal of this project is to better understand and effectively communicate the intersection between resiliency practices and historic preservation. In addition to illustrating practical steps and proposing new preservation/resiliency frameworks, Buoyant City attempts to paint a picture of how specific adaptation strategies might embrace the culture and enhance the experience of living in the City of Miami Beach, and how the city can make practical long term solutions that embrace the preservation of the existing historic architectural and landscape typologies while simultaneously planning for a robust future.
